Attorney Palma was born and raised in New York and moved to New England in 1970. He is a graduate of Tewksbury Memorial High School and the University of Lowell (now U Mass-Lowell). He has a B.A. in Spanish. He received his law degree from Western New England School of Law. After spending one year working for a local law firm he decided to open his own practice in 1987. He spent the early part of his career as a public defender while building up a loyal client base and expanding the firm's areas of expertise.
